They say that if you do something you love for a living, you never have to work again a day in your life. While this sounds good, you're always going to have to roll your sleeves up, problem-solve, and put in some serious work — especially in the brewery business. While you could definitely pick worse gigs than brewing your own beer for a living, it definitely takes TLC, making lots of mistakes, and correcting them. Consider these suggestions so that you can build a phenomenal beer company.
Figure out what kinds of beer you make and why you make it — then make it really well
Trying to do too much and please too many can leave you with a watered-down product. Some of the most booming fast food joints in the country make money hand over fist, with lines blocks away, and only have three different menu items. When your product is great, you don't need a lot of different specials or bells and whistles.
If you specialize in India pale ale (IPA), make the absolute best IPA possible. Toy with the balance of hops and malts, and figure out where on the International Bitterness Units (IBU) scale you want your IPA to fall. Once you've got that magic formula, keep perfecting it. Don't rush to make 15 different menu items. It's better to have two or three IPAs, a couple of pale ales, and a few brown offerings that are all good, than a couple dozen beers of all types that you lose money brewing each month.
When you have some winning selections, the word will spread. People will want growlers filled with these beers, and you'll keep them coming back.
Have growlers ready for people to enjoy
To-go growlers are a selling point for every brewery or brewpub. Brand these growlers, and make sure you always have clean ones ready to fill with whichever beers you have on tap. Aside from the beer itself, make sure you are choosing quality growlers.
These growlers should be made with tough glass and an airtight cap. Invest in a ball and lock growler cap so that it maintains a quality seal, and so that you don't run the risk of spillage. Your customers will appreciate it. Sell them at a good price, and always have some deals that your customers will enjoy. Use the steps above as you grow your brewery.
